Swimming Pool Safety for Families with Young Children
October 6, 2008
A swimming pool can be a real highlight of your home, a place where families and friends gather to enjoy spending time with each other and warm summer days. As fun as swimming pool can be, it is still a very dangerous addition to homes—particularly homes with young children. Some personal safety advocate organizations advise that families with children younger than five years old refrain from having a swimming pool installed; however, you can protect children of all ages by sticking to child safety and general pool safety measures.
Of course, the best way to protect your children from harm is to never leave your children alone when they are in or near the pool—even if they can swim well. Many parents think that their children are old enough, or can swim well enough, to be left alone for a couple of minutes. This is simply not true! Very young children need to be within an arm’s length at all times.
Another safety measure that parents need to consider is to build a fence between their house and the pool, as many children drown by simply wandering out of the house and falling into the pool. Also, keep all rescue equipment and a telephone within easy access of the pool. Another great product that parents should strongly consider purchasing is a pool alarm, which alerts parents if a child or a pet falls into their swimming pool. This product is easy to use and can be a literal lifesaver in an emergency situation.
Don’t let your swimming pool become a child safety hazard—take real steps to improve the personal safety of everyone in your home. For even more ideas about how to keep your family safe around your swimming pool, visit www.promarksafety.com.

Thank you for the reminder about pool safety and security. I think it can be easy to become complacent with pool safety and measures need to be put in place to protect from that.
